Kylie Verzosa guarantees Philippines’ 6th Miss International crown

“We’ll have six.”
That’s a confident-sounding Binibining Pilipinas-International 2016 Kylie Verzosa pretty much assuring the country that she will win in this year’s Miss International beauty pageant.
Even though the prestigious international pageant is not happening until October 27, Kylie is already making her bold declaration this early. If she ultimately succeeds, she will become the sixth Filipina to win the coveted crown after Gemma Cruz-Araneta, Aurora Pijuan, Melanie Marquez, Precious Lara Quigaman and Bea Rose Santiago.
During the recent bloggers’ conference of this year’s Binibining Pilipinas winners at the Gateway Tower Gallery in Araneta Center, the girls were asked how prepared they are for their respective international competitions now on a scale of 1 to 10. Kylie was the only one who answered 10.
The 24-year-old Business Management graduate and former pre-school teacher from Baguio City said that her competitive nature stems from her strong desire to win the Miss Universe Philippines crown that ultimately went to Maxine Medina.
Kylie recalled that when she first joined the Binibining Pilipinas pageant last year, she was still disappointed despite making it to the Top 15 semifinals and winning the Bb. Philippine Airlines special award.
“When I made the Top 15 last year, I had a nice view of the other girls who won the crown but it was still very upsetting,” she shared.
So when she decided to give it another shot, Kylie said she was eyeing the top crown. Indeed, she emerged as one of the pre-pageant favorites and looked poised to win it all after winning three special awards, namely Bb. Photogenic or The Face of Binibining Pilipinas, the Manila Bulletin Readers Choice, and She’s So Jag.
“I wanted Miss Universe and that was my goal. And when you get into something, you should aim for the top,” she pointed out.
During the question and answer portion, Kylie was asked by judge Miss U.S.A. 2015 Olivia Jordan why she deserved to win a Bb. Pilipinas crown.
“The person who deserves to win Binibining Pilipinas crown tonight is the person who has worked hard for it and is willing to do everything to continue the legacy of the Philippines. She is confident with an attitude and has a personality and I believe I am her,” she replied.
As confident as she sounded, Kylie admitted that she had some doubts about her chances during those nerve-wracking moments when the judges were deliberating prior to the winners’ announcement.
“After deliberations, I didn’t come out very sure I was going to win Universe so I was ready for anything. So when my name was called, I was ready. Now that I got a crown for myself, it felt so good. I wanted to cry.”
But as much as she’s very much ready for Miss International, Kylie recognizes that the pageant now on its 53rd year and more often than not, takes place in Tokyo, Japan, is not the same as Miss Universe.
“Miss International is more prim and proper. It’s held in Japan so it’s more formal. You have to know the proper etiquette, you have to have knowledge of the Japanese culture and know what Miss International is looking for,” she noted.
